Serves 52,148 customers, $128,788.00 of sales and provides 1,247 GWhs of electricity per year. 45,827 are residentialthat on average consume 1,070 kWh of electricity per month per household.
Owned by the City of Brownsville and servicing the City and some of the surrounding area, Brownsville Public Utility serves some 50,000 homes and businesses. While they have recently invested in a renewable contract, overall the utility has not been a leader on energy savings or renewable programs, even though South Texas offers excellent wind and solar resources. In 2020, they did end their use of power from the Oklaunion Coal Plant in North Texas when that unit retired.
