Denton Municipal Electric (DME) was founded in 1905, providing energy to the residents and businesses of Denton. Denton Municipal Electric has begun both solar and energy efficiency rebate programs, and has set a goal to purchase 100% of its energy from renewable sources by 2022, although it will need to sign additional contracts to reach the goal. It is important to note that even while meeting this goal, it does operate a gas plant. The municipality also helped retire a coal plant in 2019 with other municipal utilities. Recently, it began offering rebates on EVs, while also offering free energy audits, solar rebates, and other energy savings programs.
